Charlie Gibson and ABC News Camera Trickery
I'm a Director in Hollywood. I've also created visual effects for movies and commercials for 23 years. I'm not disclosing my name at this point, because frankly I've already suffered enough job loss because I was "outted" as a conservative. But enough about me. I caught a commercial teaser for the Charlie Gibson interview of Sarah Palin and something caught my attention as a Director immediately: The use of the position and choice of lenses to minimalize Governor Palin.
To be objective to see if I was jumping to conclusions, I immediately reviewed Mr. Gibson's interview with Senator Obama. Take a look below at how wide and then how even the heights are between the two. Yes, in real life Senator Obama is taller than Mr. Gibson. The shot was never tighter than the framing on the right.
Now take a look at Sarah Palin's interview below. Try to ignore the sneers for a moment. Funny how all the shots are no wider than the one on the left. There's a reason for this. While it's true that Governor Palin is of less stature than Mr. Gibson, the deliberate choice of the camera's height, framing and the use of telephoto lenses all serve to make Mr. Gibson look overpowering and Governor Palin the weak prey. This is common shooting technique we use to make a villain appear more ominous. How intuitive of ABC News to correctly portray themselves.
To illustrate this further, I utilized some storyboarding software I normally use to figure out what shots need to be set up when I shoot a movie. Notice that by merely adjusting the height of the camera and using a telephoto lens we can manipulate the shot to make either subject we want larger or smaller. The characters themselves were not scaled up or moved at all. Obviously ABC, along with Mr. Gibson and his producers chose to make her look as tiny as possible.
So, it's just one more bit of evidence on the pile of news media's bias against conservatives and women. Oh wait...what about Senator Clinton, someone about the same stature as Governor Palin....
Huh. Guess it's just conservatives. Mr. Gibson is in good company with Oprah.
Since this the first blog, let me give you a glimpse of what's in store for future articles. I'll be giving you a first hand account of such stories as puppeteers chanting to Satan behind-the-scene of a kids film and self professed co-workers of tolerance and diversity launching in to fist-pounding-on-desk, veins-bulging-in-forehead tyraids over soft spoken questions asked of them.
This is your inside look at the real Hollywood and those you give your billions to in ticket sales.
Comments
What would also be interesting is to take the questions asked from each interview and compare them.
Take a clip of only the question (not the answers), and string them together so you get the first question from each interview, second, etc..
I wonder just how revealing it would be to understand how very different the questions were between interviews.
Thanks for the, uh, perspective.
I'm looking forward to more, both the behind the scenes reports and technical things that most of us outside the industry don't recognize.
I'm glad to see that someone noticed Gibson's attempt to make Sarah Palin look small and insignificant.
He did not succeed however with this voter.
I don't vote on someones stature but on their intelligence and intuitiveness.
I vote on their ability to respond to serious issues without having to ask one of their hundreds of advisers what to say and get back to the person asking after they supposedly think it through for a few days and change their mind on the original response..
Most importantly in this day and age I vote on their ability to lead.
We need someone who can stand up for what they believe in and can tell you what that is without needing someone else to write it down for them and then coach them on how to express it.
Thank you for pointing out Gibson's trickery.
Some may not know the depths the media has gone to in order to get an inferior candidate elected just because he supposedly speaks well.
I'm always thrilled to read about conservatism in Hollywood.
I'm nowhere near Hollywood or the film industry and I noticed it, too.
I'm not sure why, but only the first sentence of my comment appeared. Strange.
Anyway, what I added is that I found it annoying that ABC seemed to have a habit of showing her giving answers while the camera was on the back of her head. It sounded like a disembodied voice answering the questions. Or they showed her from an annoying sideshot where you could sort of, almost, kind of see her face but not really. An interview should be about the person being interviewed, and their face should be the most prominent. Watching someone's face as they talk is the best way of judging their meaning and what they're saying. This seemed more like "The Charlie Gibson Show" and appeared to be more about him than her. The camera work reflected that. I guess we weren't supposed to make up our own mind about her answers, but instead we were supposed to study Gibson's reaction to her answers and learn what our opinion should be from that.
Welcome to the blog world. Breaking the Hollywood monopoly is a valuable service.
Only 1 or 2 words omitted would be enough to radically change the effect of her comments. As an example, removing "Pray that" from the beginning of her quote about praying there is a plan and it is God's plan" made a humble prayer for guidance become some crusade against the middle east.
Thank God!
Also noted are the facial expressions of Charlie Gibson. In the Obama image Gibson can be seen smiling while conducting the interview, same for Hillary. When interviewing Palin Gibson shows a reaction that is quite the opposite - a complete frown.
Great analysis on your part, thanks for sharing this!
There was some other "hollywood" style trickery in the lighting and camera angles as well.
For some reason, VOX concatenated my reply. Here it is in its entirety:
There was some other "hollywood" style trickery in the lighting and camera angles as well. While Charlie wore his trademarked reading glasses pearched on his nose, during the Palin interview the camera frequently shot Charlie head on, creating a magnified appearance of his downward (disapproving) appearing gaze of Palin. In the other interviews, the shots of Charlie are more angular creating a less disapproving appearance.
Additionally, the lighting differentials were striking - Palin was frequently cast in darkness or with high contrast (unflattering light). Obama's interview had none of these lighting issues.
Finally, the Palin interview was highly edited with many responses taken out of context. I would refer the reader to Mark Levine's website for the actual transcripts with highlights of the edited portions.
Keep up the good work.
Take a look and decide for yourself.
Note the backgrounds: Hillary's "frame" (what is visible when you see

I too am a creationist and reject the hogwash that is Darwinism - and I'm no moron, buddy.
Looks like Charlie Gibson joins the ranks of Chris Matthews and Keith Olbermann.
Your argument makes no sense. According to your argument, if ABC is making Palin look weak, they're also making Gibson look like a villain. That makes Gibson look like a bully more than Palin a victim.
I'm conservative, but I'm not going to be one of those people that blindly support a candidate because they're Republican and act like the other candidate is always wrong because he's a Democrat. I made that mistake in 2004 and look at where we are now under Bush.
My party has become horribly corrupt, and they pander to religious leaders and lobbyists. I want the GRAND old party, like in the days of Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt. With Obama in office, it'll give the GOP a chance to clean house and become the party it SHOULD be instead of the embarrassment it is now.
You are
Thanks for a very interesting post. (I came here from the Instapundit link). Reading your article made me recall a 60 Minutes interview I saw a month or so ago, when it was re-run from earlier in the year. The story concerned Frank Wuterich, who is charged with 18 murders (of civilians) in Haditha. Charges against some of his fellow soldiers have been dropped and the trial for Wuterich has been postponed, but I believe the charges are still there. Anyhow, on the 60 Minutes interview, they framed his face in a grotesquely tight close up that really made him look freakish. The video can be seen here. The grotesque close ups start around 1:35 into the story (which appears after a short ad).

I'd love to get your take on this. Honestly, the close ups are so tight that his hole head is not even in the picture. The shot goes from a couple of inches above his eyebrows (just below the hairline) down to the chin. I don't recall ever seeing anyone framed quite like that in an extended interview before and the intended affect, I think, was to make look bizarre and abnormal. Am I imagining this?
This is interesting though, and I'm sure ABC PR dept. is already on it. I know I'll be looking at how Palin is framed carefully now.
OK... let me get this straight. ABC uses a shot to make Gibson look more like a villian, presumably bullying the tiny, defenseless govenor, and it's supposed to be anti-Palin?
Most Americans stand up for the small guys, last I heard. Perhaps you live in a different America? I'd see this working to Palin's favor.
" I'd see this working to Palin's favor."
It very well might.
" I'd see this working to Palin's favor."
It very well might. And, if so, it then becomes another screw up on mainstream media's part. That's the point we're making - they're so cloddish that they don't even realize when they're being stupid. Going overboard with Palin has done nothing but hurt the media's credibility so far, regardless of the faults Palin might legitimately have. They've made themselves the game, instead of her.
[Someone needs to fix the somewhat serious problem this blog has with cutting off most of a poster's comment when they aren't signed in yet and after they type their comment they are directed through the sign in, or registration, process. That's twice for me already.]
http://www.mediabistro.com/tvnewser/abc/new_yorker_column_short_on_facts_long_on_attacks_of_abc_news_94445.asp
This is the exact thing I'm talking about. In America today, if you don't tow the party line for the Dems or the GOP you're not a true Democrat or Republican.
Enough. This shouldn't be treated like Yankees vs Red Socks. This is the future of the country, not a competition to see which side is right.
"Small woman. Large man. Simple as that."
And they've never dealt with that before. Please.
That's our host's point. There are technical ways to handle that sort of situation. ABC chose not to be professional about it and do their job right. Was it technical incompetence by experienced cameramen or was it purposeful because it fit the story they were trying to tell? It's up to the viewer to decide.
It also still doesn't explain the shots where she's answering questions while they show the back of her head. It was shoddy, shoddy camera work and editing.
I agree she wouldn't go for the victim card. Good for her. But there is nothing wrong with us holding ABC to a minimum level of professionalism. Unflattering camera angles, as evidenced by the scandal at the Atlantic Monthly, can certainly be be used in an unscrupulous way.
Thank you for bringing your expert perception to this issue.
Has anyone ever wondered if Obama is a real Christian or a Muslim. When he was a small boy in Indonesia, he went to a chatolic school but because he registered as a muslim and is a practicing muslim they sent him to a Muslim tutor for his religious part of the studies. In Indonesia, they will accept you in their schools no matter what faith you practiced as long as you are a good student. Mr. Obama was a good student and a good faithful muslim. I know he has been saying in his campaign that he never practice muslim but his student record in Indonesia proves otherwise. If you have the means and the right connection maybe you should find out for yourself and decide whether you want this country to become Muslim someday or go back to the way this country was before Americans compromised their honor and integrity for the sake of almighty dollar.
Please. This woman enjoys being a victim. GOP (Rove and the Bush administration) probably requested to have her appear like a cute sweet little hockey mom. That is her gimmick. They made Obama look like a scary, big guy. If you think critically, you can actually see a whole other side of
Gibson didn't look like a villain, but more like a school principal berating a wayward student, or as a stern father chastising his daughter. That image, with the tone of the interview, gives the viewer the impression that Palin is out of her element and is too young or inexperienced to be VP.
Say no to 21st century Socialist/Fascism
Got a hunch who you might be, and since you've already been "outed," why bother hiding your I.D.? :)
Really good stuff, although this appears to accrue to our benefit, as you imply. Why does that SOB, Gibson, want to look like an overbearing SOB?
Cheers,
Ben
PS To avoid credibility issues, I suggest you get spell check. "Tyraids" should be "tirades." Saw another also, but have forgotten now.
If you will remember when Clinton was in office and doing the nasty things that he did,the media didn't want to expose that democrat either but they sure don't mind hurting every republican that they can.I think the best way to stop these people of ABC,NBC,and CBS is to stop buying any thing that they advertise if at all possible. If we hit them in their pocketbooks, then they will get the picture that we are tired of their bias reporting.
Send a e-mail to everyone that advertises on their networks and pledge to stop buying their products if this kind of one sided reporting doesn't stop. That shouldn't
Outrageous. ABC news is a sham. It should be held to task for such deceptive "reporting" I will list the links below:

ABC is practicing switch and bait on it's viewers. SHAMEFUL.
See TheAnchoress.com for a comparison of the questions Gibson asked Obama after becoming the presumptive Dem nominee and the questions he asked Palin. The former are all about his feelings concerning the breaking of a racial barrier; the latter are all a snare to make Palin look bad.
Ah, "Gotcha Gibson"...
"It's scary how biased network news has become."
What has ACTUALLY happened is that WE (thanks to Fox & talk radio) have become informed in recent years. Those network clowns have been biased as heck for decades!!!
I tried TheAnchoress.com, and it's a social site!
Oh, OK. Well, thanks, Ben.
You're welcome, Ben.
That made me laugh loudly... I think I woke up the baby... Though I've always been of the opinion that you don't need to give any rope. Most people are quite willing to find the rope themselves!
Excellent work. And I love the name of your new blog.
You are not alone, although it may seem so from time to time.
Good thinking on not using your name.
Sending your blog around.
Camera angles as a subject would make an interesting documentary, imo. There certainly is enough material out there.
All the best to you.

"Good thinking on not using your name."
Maybe so. But at the same time, so many of them live in a peer group bubble, I don't think they ever attempt to read the other side's POV. (fun being able to use that term here ;)
Thanks for your encouragement!
I'm always fascinated when the subject of the old blacklisting days comes up.
Some peer group bubbles should look up the term 'hypocrisy'.
Just my POV ; )
Back to camera angles, watching the Hannity interview made a nice contrast.
Bonus: No watching those awful Charlie Gibson grimaces.
Extra credit (someone stop me): His clipping service is collecting all these comments.
I attended the massive McCain/Palin rally in Fairfax, VA with my daughter last week, and she echoed your sentiment---in her school, the conservatives are on the down-low, and she felt very much that attending the rally gave her the courage to express her political beliefs.
While you focused on camera shots, I saw the predatory behavior in his facial expressions and body language.
Gibson is relaxed and pleasant with both Obama and Hillary...while with Palin, he looks like a Nazi soldier.
This is SO good! Just look at all the responses! Welcome to VOX, and keep up the great articles!
I feel for you working in Hollywood. Just stick to your guns, knowing that most Americans do NOT think like the lefty crazies out there.
And please don't use obscenities (or implied obscenities) when communicating with me. I don't appreciate it.
Lexann Johnson and facts?!? You're too fucking funny. You swallowed the Ashley Todd hoax faster than you would Eric's dick. He must be so proud.
See you at the polls, darlin'!

Republicans are meeting to perform an autopsy on its rotting corpse. Heavy-hitters across the party's currently tiny political spectrum are going to go into retreat to do an autopsy on this election and their branding. Do they really have to think all that hard about what went wrong?
I don't hold high hopes for this meeting, given where it was held and the goal at the outset:
This is a party that seriously needs new ideas. All these folks need to do is play videos of various McCain/Palin rallies held around the country and take a look at who was attending them (and how they behaved). Bible-beaters, people who vote against their own interests, and bigots. Sadly that's their base, and it doesn't look like the America of the future; their world is shrinking. You know they have no clue about what to do when this happens:
LOL! Here you go!
Also the person who types in greek is also a spammer for porn. It also has many accounts on Vox. Anytime you see the greek (or whatever language that is) it's porn everytime.
Hollywood trenches: A heads up on Twana Blevins - This freak has many accounts on Vox. If you so choose, you can hoover over the asshole's avatar and you'll see a popup box. At the bottom of that you have an option to block. If you click that it (American Infidel, Twana Blows, whatever... ) will not be able to spam you pages with it's trash.
Now let's get back to the topic in this post. Do any of my fellow voxers feel Sarah Palin's camera angles cost John McCain and the republicans the election? Maybe they wouldn't have lost so badly if Palin didn't have to suffer all that trickery? Just askin'.
p.s. Hi Lexy! Hugs.
